Florida’s Mobile Homes
In the constrained spaces of trailer homes, every possession must hold significant meaning or utility; there is simply no room for the superfluous. The fragility of this lifestyle is stark—within just five minutes, a fire can completely obliterate a mobile home and its contents. This photo project delves into the tightly knit communities of Florida's trailer home residents, capturing their everyday lives, from children playing in the streets to the heart-wrenching grief of losing one's home.
The Sale of Adak Alaska - Birders and Bidders
Once a bustling U.S. Naval base with nearly 7,000 residents, Adak's population has dwindled since the military's departure. In 2007, Icicle Seafoods took over a 250,000 sq. ft. seafood processing facility, investing in upgrades. However, new government quotas to protect sea lions made profitability impossible, leading Icicle Seafoods to return the facility to its lender.
Ultimately, a multi-faceted marketing campaign was launched, leading to a successful auction. The City of Adak won the bid, ensuring the facility remained intact to benefit the local community. This sale not only preserved one of Adak's few employment sources but also highlighted the resilience and adaptability of the island's community amidst its harsh and unique environment.
This article is a description of the challenges faced during the sale and coincides with Levy’s photographic documentation of the remote community.
